No pics fromt he boys ride yesterday. They were at Silver Star and I was inthe hospital with the family, so you'll just have to imagine some pics of their day.

Today we went to Gillard to shred the Kelowna gnarcore.



Tyler put on a clinic for the boys, to make sure that they got the idea.



Ooops, forgot to phone the girlfriend. The boy has skills on the bike, and apparently in other areas too. Look at that spadework....



Still, better get home or this will be your ONLY ride...

Yes, it's DAY 2, and the shenanigans continue.



Today was best line, and the kids were going for it.

So, unlike yesterday, it was about who could throw down the whole line today. Not just one jump, but the overall styles.



I dunno what you think, but that set of denims on the right has some serious styles if you ask me.



Must have been the Romo fan club...

Anyway, back to the comp.









So everyone jumped. I forget who won. It was some youg guy who slayed a couple of nice clean runs without missing any landings. Pretty sweet. Casey threw down this flipwhip after the event, just because.



Oh, and Romo had to send a big three without tacoing his wheel....



....just because.

OK, we've farted around enough for now. Time for the real goods.

All the boys were getting a few good hits in here.





Even "What Has Poews Done" dropped a couple of good lines today.



Still, it was 'Locals Only' on the big boys lines.



However, there was time for payback a pllenty on the wall. Once Scott got going on this one there was no stopping him.





Jimbo had a few issues at first. It's a big and intimidating line for sure, but once you get over the fear...



....Giddyup.







We also went for a little inspection lap of a new trail that is apparently just for Cyborgs.



It will be ready for human consumption sometime in 2009.





We finished off with another line called "Technical Difficulty" which incorporates some rad rock lines and a few ramps into a sweet combo of gnar for dessert.

What was supposed to be the Padwan Tour (the young Jedi council riders) has sort of fallen apart. We have a few riders coming out, but it's not really the full slate we've come to expect from this crew.

Not to worry, Barb and I are working on some numbers.....

Gesundheit. Ok, we crawled our way out of a bit of a hangover from yesterdays adventures and went over to Gillard again today. We thought we'd get Lindsay (whe's new to the riding game) a bit of a confidence builder. Here she is sneering at our spotting attempts on a nice teeter.



Nic as usual was slaying everything in sight.



The rest of hte crew was loving all the old hits, including this one on Rubherdown.

For round two we cracked off a Kerplop session, and spent a bit of time up on the barbwire gap.





Several flat tires later, we were Kerplopping at the bottom.

You know, we're still on the first lap. A fair amount of variety on this run.





OK, NOW we can get to the second lap. We charged an old DH line down to Dr. No.



Dr No is unlike most of the trails in this zone in that it's slow, technical, steep, and has views. Here's Mike a couple of hundred feet above the rocks.



It's seriously technical.



Mike inspects the craftsmanship. Check the way the wood is fitted into the natural rock there.

Sure, it took a few runins to dial it in, but you know he ran back for a half dozen more hits once he figured it out.

Of course, some of us might be feeling less pain than others at the end of the day.

All good things must come to pass, and wee're finally outta cake. How ironic that I have no pics of all the cakes we consumed. I swear, there were at least two cakes a day on this event. We had our cake AND we ate it too.

Hence the title.

Alright, today was Ken's day. He slept in pretty late this morning, and when he finally did get up, I got this wicked vibe coming off him.



Really, it should have been Sven's day, as he bucked up and purchased the Angry Bumblebee. Yes, he got a "Smokin'" deal. Yes, he deserves it. Fly free, brave Bumble.....



Noel was managing to stay upright, except when he was on the wallrides. where you don't want to stay upright. The streak is broken, Noel had a clean ride today.



Sven is studying the instructions. Ken isn't worried at all.

Great day. Great weekend, and the last May Two Four for us as non-parental type units.

tick...tock.....the child approacheth....

Cascade Environmental is a company that has been hired by the City of Kelowna to help formulate the trails strategy for the region. In my capacity with the MTBco (the new central Okanagan bike association), I took them out for a little familiarization ride today.



We just had time for a single lap up on Gillard, but that's good enough for one day. Still a small amount of snow up top, but it's no big deal. Plus, I got to ride a trail I've never seen before. This would be "Ghost Rider".

Here's a fun thing to do with a New Year's Day hangover. Go ride in the snow.




Now, lots of people who've never experienced this think that riding in the snow is really hard. Actually, in lots of ways it's easier than normal. The trails fill in and get smoother, it doesn't matter so much where your tires go, and if you do fall down it doesn't hurt so much.



We had a really solid turnout for this one. At least 20 riders made it out for this session on Knox Mtn. I was a little late courtesy of a dead battery, but still managed to get there in time to run the shuttle for everyone. Thanks to the guy who drove the van for a lap so I could get a run in. Oh, and Barb too (I told you she's pregnant, right? Well, she's pregnant. I'm pretty sure it's mine....).



Ho wabout that, an actual riding shot. All these pics are courtesy of Rich's cell phone. I had some kind of wierd data transfer failure and lost all the pics I took. Honestly, they weren't all that great anyway. These are better. This next one is the boys checking out the line off the top for first tracks. It was a little freaky starting out on something that tech, but once you dove in it was easy. Rob had some good times dodging trees down lower, but it was all good.



Summer sure seems a long way off from here, but really, it's only a couple of months until we're ripping the dirt again.

We went back to ride the results of our build and fix party today. I think we're going to have many days like this in the future. Between fire damage and beetle kill, scenes like this are going to be all too common...



I got to ride yet another trail I didn't know about today. RubHer Down is a quick hit lower down in Gillard that has a bunch of rad and techy airs.



Jules was sending it pretty hard in here, even though the ground was a bit slow today. I'll only mention the "case" here in passing....



With a bunch of frost on Boss Hog, we stuck to Wobbly Pops. It's such a nice looking trail, and it's always fun to charge the easier stuff. Less consequences, eh?





We also had a lap on Kerplop, which as mentioned in a previous post was extrememly hard hit. It was surprisingly rideable considering the level of damage that was incurred. There's definitely some hard hit areas, and lots of structures are gone, but some of the technical rocky steep sections are now even more fun, as they've gotten harder. I thought I was on the Shore at times. Sorry, no pics of that for you. Too busy riding to take the camera out. Instead enjoy these classic Kelowna shots.





That was likely the last bike ride of the year up here. MAYBE one more. I'll let you know....

The first real winter storm of the season that rolled through the Okanagan last week devastated the Gillard trails. Since this area was toasted by a forest fire a few years back, it's much more prone to wind damage than many other areas. Powers Creek suffered a few trees downed, but nothing like this.....



That's the exit to Yo Mama. Luckily, the Kelowna Collective got several bodies and saws together and rallied to the rescue. Over 20 peole showed up to put in some serious effort on the part of this area.



Yo Mama probably got some of the least damage of the whole area, and this is what it looked like.



Rob has been out all week clearing the lower stuff like Boss Hog, and here he is next to the repaired jump from that last shot.



This one's going to take a little more work. It WAS a huge stepdown move, but with a fat rootball on the lander it's going to be springtime before this line is sendable again.



The hardest hit was Kerplop. Ryan McKenna and a crew of guys (including our buddy Jonathon, brother of our sometime guide and super helper Courtenay) went over to deal with that. What they got looked like the aftermath of Mt St Helens.



We got our lines cleared, and thanks to a huge effort on the part of many others, Kerplop, Cat's Ass, Snakes Back, and many others were cleared up. We ran out of light, so you'll have to wait until the next post for some riding shots.

Wa and Zak are back, this time on the way to Nelson, so we managed another ride with them. They brought along a new guy...



Oh wait, that's not him. That's a Great Basin Spadefoot Toad. I was a bit tired still from all the recent activity, so we went for a bit of an exploration over by the Myra Canyon/Bellvue trails.



The old Crawford DH is another great lap for nice scenery and flowy singletrack. How many of htese can I stand to have close by?

Last day, and the weather is bit iffy. So was the guides alertness factor, too for that matter. Something about driving half the night.

Luckily Gilliard wasn't too far away, even if the landing on this stepdown was.

We got slapped with a few hours of rain delay after a couple of Gilliard runs, but even though it was pissing out...



...we got a reprieve later and cracked off one more high speed lap in the grease of Builders Only.

A grey day today, but still pretty nice riding weather. The Okanagan gets kind of dusty otherwise. So, we're at Outbound Cycle this morning and I ran into an old acquaintance from hanging around the race scene from time to time.


Karey Watanabe, Canadian born Japanese DH legend just strolled on up, so we made a plan to go hit the trails.






She's the one wearing the skirt. Anyway, we did a warmup lap on Powers Creek to get the ball rolling, then headed on over to Gilliard tp try out some of the trails I haven't hit yet.






They're pretty good. Nice skirt, by the way.






Skinnyman had to give 'er a go too. I missed David's air, as he pretty much jumped over me. Freakin kids these days.....



At any rate, that Cat's Ass, Fist First run is pretty sweet. Then we went to Boss Hog for a session.





The Kid hit's the step-up, of course. What you won't see for a while is Skinnyman accidentally nose manualing the same move...since it's on video and I don't feel like editing right now. Hey, I got it, and it's pretty funny.






Wallride...and we're out.

Today was another day of popped cherries for all of us. For some strange reason, I've never ridden Gilliard in K-Town before. Today was high time I remedied that situation.



I think you may have seen this gap before. The general consensus was that the landing is just too roached to be practical now, but personally I don't care how cherry the landing looks. I'm sure that some punk will be hitting tomorrow on a hardtail but whatever. You can have that thing.





Anyway, on to Ker-Plop. Origianlly cut by my man Vince, this trail has gone through an evolution of sorts, especially following the big fires from a few years ago. It's got a lot of rocky terrain, but also a lot of big linked moves. Like this fence gap.

As the trail gets going, there are more and more technical lines like this skinny section that alternate with little gaps and hits.

There's also some great constructions. This stepdown is the 8 foot culmination of a long ladder with a four foot stepdown to elelvated landing that crosses a swamp.

The last line on this trail is a combo of several skinny lines that drop you onto a road over another barbwire fence.

Those little combo moves were just a warmup for the main event. Lick-Her Sore is essentially one big continous linked stunt. It starts pretty mellow, with some nice skinny to skinny lines....
